Green Schools at Ballyhea NS

Green Schools

Green-Schools, known internationally as Eco-Schools, is an international environmental education programme, environmental management system and award scheme that promotes and acknowledges long-term, whole-school action for the environment.

Ballyhea N.S. has participated in the Green-Schools programme for many years and has successfully achieved the following flags:

  • Litter and Waste
  • Energy
  • Water
  • Travel
  • Biodiversity
  • Global Citizenship – Litter and Waste
  • We are currently working on the Global Citizenship Energy flag.

Children from various classes have been involved in:

  • Green School Committee
  • Renewal of the flags achieved to date
  • Planning for the various flags
  • Planting bulbs and vegetables in our school garden and tunnel
  • Harvesting vegetables and fruit
  • Observing and identifying garden birds
  • National Spring Clean-Up
  • Anti-littering posters
  • WOW – Walk on Wednesday

The School Garden
We are committed to keeping our school clean and tidy. Every year we have worked hard to improve our schoolyard. The Wild-flower patch is greatly admired by all. Children now have the opportunity to grow plants in the newly erected Polytunnel and they care for them with their classmates. This is an experience enjoyed by all.
