Active School and Sports at Ballyhea NS

Active School and Sports

Hurling & Camogie
Hurling and Camogie are a very big part of sports in Ballyhea N.S. Children participate in various school competitions such as Sciath na Scol and have been very successful down through the years. GAA coaching skills are provided to children in school in conjunction with the local GAA Club.

Active School
Ballyhea N.S. is very proud to be an Active School and we have received four Active School Flags in recognition of this. We have a very busy Active Schools Committee, who are constantly thinking of ways to keep us active and provide opportunities to get us moving!! They also work closely with our Health Promoting Committee to organise events to keep our bodies and minds healthy.

PE – Physical Education
The full physical education curriculum is taught at Ballyhea N.S. The six strands of the curriculum include Athletics, Dance, Gymnastics, Games, Outdoor & Adventure Activities and Aquatics. All children take part in at least 1 hour of PE every week.

Physical Activity
We believe that children should be encouraged to stay as active as possible including at break times. On wet days, when children cannot go outside for breaks, they are taken to the Hall for exercise breaks.

The 6th Class children organise a hike on the Ballyhoura’s in June, where they fundraise for the Irish Cancer Society. This has become an annual event and lots of good memories are made before they leave us to go their separate ways on to Secondary School.

Active Schools Week
Active Schools Week (ASW) is one of the highlights of the year. Every year, a timetable of the week is given to all students and their families detailing what is in store for the week. There are firm favourites every year such as the Parents Sports Day, but we like to try out new activities regularly, such as Yoga, Gymnastics, GAA Coaching etc.

Our Active Schools Week ends with a whole school Sports Day. Every child in the school takes part in teams which include children from Juniors to 6th. There is great excitement every year as the children take part in co-operative games, water games and traditional favourites such as the sack race and running races, and a visit from the Ice-Cream truck to end the week!
